Acolytes
Children and youth (age 8 and up) are invited to be acolytes. Our acolytes help the clergy with the worship service Sundays, Christmas, Holy Week and Easter. Acolytes have the Summer off.
The Gospel and Epistle acolytes carry the torches (candles) and the Crucifer carries the cross. They lead the procession at the beginning of our service and lead the recession at the end of our service. They also help clergy set and clear the altar for Communion.
The training provided by Father Nathan and experienced acolytes is short and easy. Training is usually scheduled in the Autumn.
Acolytes generally serve once a month. It is a wonderful way for youth to be involved in worship and connect with each other and the Saint Mary’s community.
Additionally, some area high schools require community service hours for graduation. High school students may earn community service hours as an acolyte.
