Discernment Committee Update: Listening, Learning, and Looking Ahead

By Tricia Wheeler and Pat Peard

The St. Mary’s Discernment Committee has been hard at work over the past few months, engaging with our parish community to better understand who we are, where we’ve been, and where God is calling us next. This vital work will help shape our parish profile and guide the search for our next rector.

A Season of Listening

We’ve been deeply encouraged by the thoughtful participation of so many in our congregation. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve accomplished so far:

  • 5 Adult Listening Sessions – Gathering insights from parishioners of all ages and backgrounds.

  • 1 Youth Listening Session (ages 12-18) – Hearing the voices and hopes of our younger members.

  • 54 Online Survey Responses – Capturing perspectives from those who couldn’t attend in person.

  • 8 Committee/Guild Leaders Consulted – Learning from those who help shape our parish life.

  • 14 Homebound/Unable-to-Attend Parishioners Interviewed – Ensuring all voices are included.

  • 5 Staff Members Interviewed – Gaining valuable input from those who serve St. Mary’s daily.

In total, 150 parishioners participated in listening sessions, surveys, or both—representing 50% of our active congregation (based on the 2024 Parochial Report). The online survey alone saw an 18% response rate, reflecting strong engagement.

What’s Next?

Now, we begin the work of distilling and organizing all the feedback we’ve received. This will inform our responses to the Diocesan Office of Transition Ministry (OTM) questionnaire, a 12-question document that helps the diocese understand our parish’s needs, strengths, and vision.

We’ll collaborate with Rev. Jane and Rev. Suzanne from the Diocese to refine our responses before submission. Once approved, the OTM profile will be used to post the rector position and attract potential candidates.

Additionally, we’re developing a St. Mary’s Parish Profile for our website, offering candidates a deeper look at our community, our ministries, and the vibrant areas of Falmouth and Portland where we live and serve.

How Can You Stay Involved?

This process belongs to the whole parish, and we welcome your continued prayers and support. If you have questions or reflections to share, please reach out to the Discernment Committee at [email protected].

As we move forward, we trust that the Holy Spirit is guiding us—and we’re grateful for each of you who has contributed to this important work. Stay tuned for further updates!
