Exciting News: World-Renowned Musician James Kennerley Joins St. Mary’s This Fall!
We are thrilled to share some exciting news with our St. Mary’s community! This fall, the Episcopal Church of Saint Mary in Falmouth will welcome world-renowned musician James Kennerley as our new Music Minister. James brings with him a wealth of talent, experience, and a deep passion for music that will undoubtedly enrich our worship services and community life.
James Kennerley is no stranger to the world of sacred music. As Portland’s municipal organist for the famous Kotzschmar organ, he has captivated audiences with his artistry and skill. His impressive resume includes serving as music director for three Episcopal churches in New York and Connecticut, as well as most recently at St. Paul’s Choir School and Parish in Harvard Square.
Rector Nathan Ferrell expressed his enthusiasm for James’ arrival, saying, “James is a musical genius, and he’s an internationally-renowned musician. To have someone like that here in Falmouth is remarkable.”
For James, music is more than just entertainment—it’s a gateway to something deeper. “People are always looking for something, and music is often that gateway,” he shared. “I would like to think that when I make music, and the people I make music with, that there’s always that tangible sense of a higher purpose than just entertainment.”
James’ journey into music began in England, where he grew up surrounded by the sounds of the piano and the pipe organ. At just 8 years old, he joined his town’s cathedral choir and became fascinated by the organ’s majestic tones. “It has these big, thundering low notes and these loud, trumpet-like notes,” he said. “It’s totally thrilling.”
His passion for music led him to study at prestigious institutions, including The Juilliard School in New York City, and to pursue a career dedicated to performing, teaching, and sharing the transformative power of music.
As our new Music Minister, James will not only lead our congregation in song during worship services but will also oversee special musical performances for the wider community. His arrival marks an exciting new chapter for St. Mary’s, and we cannot wait to see how his gifts will inspire and uplift us all.
Please join us in welcoming James Kennerley to St. Mary’s this fall! Stay tuned for updates on upcoming musical events and opportunities to experience his extraordinary talent.
“Hearing live music is incredibly important for everyone,” James said. “It’s not just about entertainment, but finding a purpose and ‘going deep.’”
We look forward to going deep together with James as our guide, and we invite you to be part of this exciting journey.
Welcome, James!
